Sacramento — California Calls, California Labor Federation, CA Common Cause, Courage Campaign, Policy Link, and SEIU Local 1000, will be screening the documentary Inequality for All for a group of state lawmakers this evening in the State Capitol.
Inequality for All (inequalityforall.com), is a documentary that features former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty in January 2014. Since the mid-1980s, Reich has been outspoken on the issue of the growing divide between America’s rich and poor.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, the film provides disturbing evidence of the roles stagnating wages, growing personal debt, and an economy based on consumer spending, as well as the decline of manufacturing and its role in the weakening of the American economy. As Assemblymember Desaulnier notes, “Inequality for All brings sorely needed attention to the entrenched poverty and inequality that exists in America. Most importantly the film serves as a call to action. Endemic, crippling poverty should no longer exist amidst the world’s greatest wealth. As more Americans struggle to remain in the middle class, our entire economy and society is hindered.”
The film calls for action on raising the minimum wage, strengthening workers voices, investing in education, reforming Wall Street, fixing the tax system, and getting Big Money out of politics.
According to Assemblymember Weber, “The film is thought provoking for those of us who are concerned about the shrinking Middle Class, the expansion of poverty and the erosion of the American Dream.”
The goal of this screening is to ignite discussion around inequality, and to explore effective ways to combat the current trends and change the trajectory of the middle class.
