‘Efficient search’ that landed new NU President Ted Carter cost nearly $250,000.

Jack Gould, issues chairman for Common Cause Nebraska, decried the lack of openness of the search. NU convinced the Nebraska Legislature three years ago to change the law so that NU had to name only one “priority candidate.” “So it’s become much more of a closed process, which I would say is not in the best interests of the public,” Gould said.

A political watchdog group filed a complaint against Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante on Tuesday, claiming that he failed to disclose a conflict of interest he had with a former employer he hired to produce nearly $600,000 worth of public service advertisements.

Watchdog group files complaint about state treasurer’s alleged conflict

The Republican state treasurer has cited Victory Enterprises as a source of personal income in his statements of financial interest every year from 2014 to 2018, the most recent report, according to Common Cause. Gould said Murante should have filed a conflict of interest statement with the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission before entering into the Victory contract.
