Kathay Feng breaks down oral arguments in Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments today in Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission, a case with national implications for efforts to end the gerrymandering of congressional districts. Common Cause National Redistricting Director Kathay Feng issued the following statement after arguments:

Common Cause and Common Cause Illinois filed two amici briefs urging the Supreme Court on Friday to recognize the right of citizens of each state to shape laws that curtail political and incumbent gerrymandering.

National momentum for fair and transparent redistricting continued as Santa Fe, New Mexico launched implementation of an Independent Citizens’ Redistricting Commission.

Common Cause hailed Illinois lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn today as the state’s chief executive signed historic legislation permitting residents to register and vote on Election Day.

The redistricting recommendations submitted today by Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s Integrity Commission would go a long way toward shifting political power to voters and away from partisan operatives. The General Assembly should approve them promptly.
