Week Five Look-Ahead and Week Four Wrap-Up

We've made big strides in the NM Legislature, and we're just getting started!

A HUGE THANK YOU to those of you who called and emailed committee members to voice your support and to our members and partners who came to committee hearings in person to testify in-person!

First, here is what is scheduled for the week ahead:

Monday February 11th:

In the HOUSE STATE GOVERNMENT, ELECTIONS & INDIAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE:

CCNM SUPPORTS:

HB 131, POST-SESSION LOBBYING REPORTS, Sponsored by Rep. Day Hochman and Sen. Jeff Steinborn

HJR 5, PUBLIC OFFICER SALARY COMMISSION, CA, Sponsored by Rep. Angelica Rubio and Rep. Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales

HJR 6, ALLOW FOR RUNOFF ELECTIONS, CA, Sponsored by Rep. William “Bill” Pratt and Rep. Derrick Lente

HB 310, PROHIBITED FUNDRAISING PERIOD CHANGES, Sponsored by Rep. Matthew McQueen

CCNM OPPOSES:

HB 305, CANDIDATE PROOF OF RESIDENCE, Sponsored by Rep. Kelly Fajardo

Why we oppose this:

HB 305 could discourage election participation by restricting proof of residency to federally accepted IDs intended for purposes unrelated to elections.

In the HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE:

CCNM SUPPORTS:

HB 84 – AUTO VOTER REGISTRATION AT MVD & ELSEWHERE; Sponsored by Rep. Ely, Rep. Sariñana, Sen. Steinborn, Rep. Caballero & Rep. Garratt

HB 86 – ELECTION DAY & EARLY VOTING REGISTRATION; Sponsored by Rep. Ely, Rep. Sariñana, Sen. Steinborn, Rep. Caballero & Rep. Garratt

Tuesday, February 12th:

In the HOUSE CONSUMER & PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE:

CCNM OPPOSES:

HJR 4, FREE & FAIR ELECTIONS RESOLUTION, Sponsored by Rep. Christine Trujillo

Why we oppose this:

During the 2017 session, the New Mexico Legislature rescinded calls for a convention it had made in 1951, 1965 and 1976. With this action, our state lawmakers recognized the threat of a runaway convention, which could result in major changes to the U.S. Constitution and its protections in a process currently bankrolled by special interests.  This resolution would again place New Mexico on a list of states asking for a dangerous constitutional convention.

CCNM PRIORITY WINS FROM WEEK FOUR:

SB 3, CAMPAIGN FINANCE REPORTING, sponsored by Sen. Peter Wirth

UNANIMOUSLY PASSED by the SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE!

SB 4, CAMPAIGN PUBLIC FINANCING CHANGES, sponsored by Sen. Peter Wirth

PASSED SENATE RULES COMMITTEE by a vote of 7-2!

SB 3 and SB 4 advance to the SENATE FLOOR this week for a full vote.

** Look out tonight for an update on the Ethics Commission Enabling Act, which will be filed in the House by Rep. Daymon Ely on Monday morning!
