Legislative Update!

Common Cause New Mexico continues to advance good-government legislation in the 2018 session.

HJM 10 “Pass Fix It America” is up for a vote by the full House this week!

Last week, New Mexico’s legislature took its first step towards a leading the nation in a groundbreaking effort to end the vast amounts of undisclosed money that is currently being spent in our elections, and to stop partisan gerrymandering that intentionally favors any political party in drawing both state and congressional legislative districts.

This Memorial passed the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 8-3 last Friday and is now waiting to be heard on the House floor hopefully sometime this week.

Since this is a short session, things move quickly!

Please call or email your legislators and ask them to support HJM 10 TODAY!

Other Good Governance bills are also on the move!

SJR 1, Nominating Process for Boards of Regents, CA, sponsored by Sens. Jeff Steinborn and Mark Moores passed the Senate Rules committee on Monday unanimously. This Senate Joint Resolution 1 proposes an amendment the state constitution to provide for nominating committees for all appointed and reappointed members of board of regents of state educational institutions.

In effect, SJR 1 would require the Governor to nominate members of the Board of Regents from a list provided by a nominating committee established by law. In addition, the Legislature would determine the appointment, terms, powers, and duties of the nominating committees; provided that no more than fifty percent of the nominating committee shall be of the same political party.

Next, this resolution will be scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee. If passed by both chambers, the resolution is to be submitted for approval by the voters in the next general election (November 2018).

As always, thanks for checking in and lending your voice to help us build a better democracy!
