For Immediate Release Remand of Georgia Voter Roll Purges By 11th Circuit Court of Appeals a Victory for Voters

Statement of Sara Henderson, executive director, Common Cause Georgia

Posted on March 14, 2018

The 11th Circuit’s remand of Georgia’s voter roll purges is a victory for Georgia and for democracy. Common Cause Georgia is encouraged with the news of our voter roll purge case against Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Our state should not be using random criteria to remove legally registered voters from the voter rolls. Brian Kemp should not be authorizing the disenfranchisement of thousands of voters because they chose not to vote in an election cycle. Punishing Georgians for not voting by removing them from the rolls not only reduces voter confidence in the Georgia elections system but it violates the very liberties that we are entitled to enjoy by dictating when someone should cast a ballot.

Common Cause is a nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. We work to create open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.
