NEW HAMPSHIRE: 100+ State Legislators Urge Senators Shaheen and Hassan to ‘do everything in your power to pass’ Federal Pro-Voter Bills

More than 100 Granite State legislators have signed a letter urging passage of federal pro-voter legislation.

In a letter to U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, the state legislators urge their federal counterparts to “do everything in your power to pass” the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

“We thank you for your leadership on common-sense national standards to strengthen our democracy,” the letter says, before citing the current redistricting process and pending anti-voter bills as reasons why federal legislation is urgently needed.

“Granite Staters deserve a fair redistricting process, without partisan gerrymandering, and we will do everything we can to ensure that. But the only way to guarantee fair congressional maps in New Hampshire is to pass federal legislation,” the letter says.

“New Hampshire has become home to some of the most aggressive anti-voter legislation in the country,” according to the letter. “The federal standards created by the Freedom to Vote Act would create a ‘floor’ for voters’ access to the ballot box, so that all Granite State voices can be heard.”

“Thank you, Senators Shaheen and Hassan, for your continued support of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” said state Senator Rebecca Perkins-Kwoka. “As we work in New Hampshire to push back against blatantly partisan motives to pass anti-voter legislation and clearly gerrymander Congressional districts, your work in Washington to pass these urgently needed bills and send them to President Biden’s desk is deeply appreciated. I know we can count on you to help save New Hampshire from this destructive erosion of our civic culture by passing these two critical pieces of legislation.”

“This week, as Republicans on the House Special Committee on Redistricting ignore the bipartisan outcry about the egregious gerrymander of the Congressional districts, I join over 100 of my colleagues in thanking our Senators for their leadership in the Senate to protect our democracy,” said state Representative Matt Wilhelm. “Their efforts to ensure the Freedom to Vote Act passes will prevent the breaking of over 140 years of precedent in the Granite State against radically changing Congressional districts and ensure voters pick their politicians – not the other way around.”
