U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Pennsylvania Supreme Court Congressional Redistricting

Today’s Supreme Court Ruling was a victory for Pennsylvania voters who will now be able to cast ballots for congressional candidates in districts not unconstitutionally manipulated to make them uncompetitive. It has always been our belief that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court acted in the best interest of the citizens of our commonwealth. The old map was an egregious attempt to predetermine congressional elections, which is why they ruled the map as unconstitutional.

Common Cause Pennsylvania announced that after further analysis they have found no violations of the Voting Rights Act in the new congressional map issued by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Feb. 19.

Common Cause and Common Cause Pennsylvania issued statements today after Gov. Tom Wolf officially rejected the maps that Republican leadership submitted Friday to redraw the commonwealth’s 18 congressional districts in response to a state Supreme Court ruling in January that found the legislative borders to be unconstitutionally gerrymandered.

California Local Redistricting Project Releases New Tool to Facilitate Local Redistricting Reform

Today, the California Local Redistricting Project – a joint project of the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law’s Capital Center for Law & Policy and California Common Cause – announced the release of a new tool to enable local governments to fight redistricting abuse at the local level. The Project’s ordinance generator, hosted at www.localredistricting.org/generator, enables any user to easily draft a sample ordinance for establishing a local, independent redistricting commission, which is considered a vital redistricting best practice by good government watchdogs.

Effort to Impeach Pennsylvania Supreme Court Over Congressional Districts Ruling is Disgraceful

Pennsylvania State Rep. Cris Dush is calling for the impeachment of the justices on the state Supreme Court who ruled in favor of a redrawing of the state's congressional map ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. Rep. Dush circulated a letter addressed to the state House on Monday arguing that the five Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices behind the decision violated the state constitution by usurping authority from the state constitution.
