Lawsuit Opposes Language of Redistricting Amendment

Susan Lerner, executive director of Common Cause NY, is one of four plaintiffs in a lawsuit opposing the language of the ballot proposal that will ask voters if they want to amend the state constitution to overhaul the current redistricting system. The compromise proposal, worked out two years ago by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the legislative leaders who control the current once-a-decade process, would hand the work off to a panel appointed by elected officials — although politicians would retain the privilege of drawing their own maps in the event that the panel’s more independent designs are twice rejected by the Legislature.
