Statement of Karen Hobert Flynn, Common Cause President Karen Hobert Flynn

As if further proof was needed, the lawsuit filed today by Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap removes any shred of legitimacy the Pence-Kobach Commission has tried to cling to since its creation. The right to vote is a sacred one in our nation, yet this presidential commission has sought from the outset to twist the truth in order to justify laws that have stripped millions of Americans of the franchise for partisan political gain. The commission has been a sham from its inception, stacked with notorious vote suppressors. Secretary Dunlap was clearly asked to join the commission to provide cover as one of its token Democrats. But as his lawsuit makes clear, when the facts didn’t line up with reality the Commission excluded Secretary Dunlap from its work, and denied him access to the documents the Commission has collected and produced, all in violation of the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

This commission has been a sham from the moment it was created and a waste of tax dollars. It is disgraceful that a presidential commission was ever assembled to try to justify laws that strip Americans of the right to vote without cause and solely for political ends. The commission should be shut down immediately.
