Democracy Spotlight: Representative Theresa Mah

Democracy Spotlight: Representative Theresa Mah

With the event just six weeks away, we are proud to introduce you to one of our 2017 Champion of Democracy awardees, Representative Theresa Mah.

With the inauguration upon us, We The People must to be ready and willing to fight for the government we believe in. Come together with Common Cause as we work to build a 21st century democracy here in Illinois. As we take on this challenge, we must remember to celebrate the victories we have achieved and the champions who work tirelessly to defend our democracy!

With the event just six weeks away, we are proud to introduce you to one of our 2017 Champion of Democracy awardees, Representative Theresa Mah. Theresa is the newly elected State Representative for the 2nd District. As a child of immigrants, Mah has fought tirelessly for working families, focusing on education, job growth, and immigration reform. As a former senior policy adviser to Gov. Pat Quinn, Mah’s leadership helped to create job and education opportunities for working families including many immigrants.

Mah was on faculty at the University of Chicago and as an effective advocate, rallied the Chinese American community to push for single district in the last round of redistricting to gain a more unified voice. Mah also successfully advocated for a new, state-ofthe-art public library branch and field house in Chinatown and lobbied to successfully restore the 31st Street bus route. As a Local School Council member at Thomas Kelly High School, Mah’s leadership has transformed the lives and improved the academic outcomes of Hispanic and Asian-American students.

Stay tuned for more information about the event, honorees and featured guests. I look forward to seeing you on March 6.
