“Every voter in America has the right to have their voice heard, by casting and having their ballot counted — that’s how our government ‘by the people’ is supposed to work. Florida voters should have the freedom to cast their ballots in the same ways they have voted in past election cycles.”

"We are particularly concerned that SB 90, by design, seeks to silence voters’ voices based on what they look like or where they come from," the organizations said.

Hundreds of Common Cause Florida members have contacted their elected officials to oppose these changes in voting access. But SB 90 is moving fast, being pushed through the legislative process during a session that has been notable for its lack of transparency and difficulty of public participation.

It may be popular with some Florida politicians, but Common Cause Florida members are firmly opposed to it. More than 5,000 of our members have contacted their elected officials to urge them to vote against the bill.

The Florida Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hear House Bill 1, which would create new criminal penalties for protesting. Our country would not have moved forward without protests. Women’s suffrage. Ending child labor. The 40-hour work week. Voting rights for people of color.

Three weeks ago, a group of more than 30 Florida organizations wrote to legislative leaders urging them to “ensure accountability and an open, accessible, and transparent process that allows for meaningful input from the public.” With the policies the organizations object to remaining largely unchanged, the groups held a media briefing to highlight the need for accessible technology, procedures for public testimony and other methods to ensure that the Legislature provides ample opportunities for public input.
