Common Cause Florida is opposing Amendment 2, a ballot measure that will go before voters in the Nov. 8 election and stands to remove an important pathway Floridians have to change their state’s constitution.

Hundreds of Common Cause Florida members have contacted their elected officials to oppose these changes in voting access. But SB 90 is moving fast, being pushed through the legislative process during a session that has been notable for its lack of transparency and difficulty of public participation.

It may be popular with some Florida politicians, but Common Cause Florida members are firmly opposed to it. More than 5,000 of our members have contacted their elected officials to urge them to vote against the bill.

Three weeks ago, a group of more than 30 Florida organizations wrote to legislative leaders urging them to “ensure accountability and an open, accessible, and transparent process that allows for meaningful input from the public.” With the policies the organizations object to remaining largely unchanged, the groups held a media briefing to highlight the need for accessible technology, procedures for public testimony and other methods to ensure that the Legislature provides ample opportunities for public input.

Last week, more than 30 grassroots organizations told legislative leaders they “are deeply concerned about government transparency and public oversight” and outlined specific requests. To date, despite followup phone calls, the organizations have not received any substantive response to their letter, and the policies the organizations object to remain unchanged. 

Represented by Covington & Burling LLP, Common Cause Florida today filed an amicus brief in Jones v. DeSantis, urging a federal appeals court to uphold a decision that concluded a Florida law that created wealth-based hurdles to voting is unconstitutional.
