Common Cause Urges Florida Senators to Vote Against Anti-Protest Bill

It may be popular with some Florida politicians, but Common Cause Florida members are firmly opposed to it. More than 5,000 of our members have contacted their elected officials to urge them to vote against the bill.

Common Cause Opposes Florida’s Anti-protest Bill

The Florida Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hear House Bill 1, which would create new criminal penalties for protesting. Our country would not have moved forward without protests. Women’s suffrage. Ending child labor. The 40-hour work week. Voting rights for people of color.

Florida Grassroots Groups call for More Transparency, Public Access to Legislative Processes

Three weeks ago, a group of more than 30 Florida organizations wrote to legislative leaders urging them to “ensure accountability and an open, accessible, and transparent process that allows for meaningful input from the public.” With the policies the organizations object to remaining largely unchanged, the groups held a media briefing to highlight the need for accessible technology, procedures for public testimony and other methods to ensure that the Legislature provides ample opportunities for public input.

Florida Voters Need to Pay Attention to Partisan Proposals to Change Our Elections System

Our elected officials are supposed to represent ‘the people’ – not partisan or special interests.  Gov. They are clearly in service of partisan interests -- and we’ve already seen where that can lead.

Common Cause FL Statement on 11th Circuit Court of Appeals Decision

"The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decision issued today is anathema to our country’s values. Our republic is stronger when more people participate. The ability to vote should never be conditioned on economic circumstances. The 'demos' in democracy means all the people decide, not the moneyed people."

UPDATE: Jones v DeSantis oral arguments

Today, the federal appeals court held oral arguments in Jones v. DeSantis, a case determining the constitutionality of wealth-based obstacles to voting. "SB 7066 limits the number of poor people who are able to vote. It creates a pay-to-vote scheme that is anathema to our country’s values. The ability to participate in our democracy should never be conditioned on economic circumstances."
