Common Cause Ohio Weighs in on Constitutional Modernization Commission’s Redistricting Fail

Columbus Dispatch article on Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission redistricting fail

Ohio’s Constitutional Modernization Commission failed last week to develop a proposal to send to the legislature to create an independent entity to redraw legislative lines after each census. Ohio legislators are currently allowed to manipulate their own district and congressional lines in a way that benefits themselves and their political party.

As reported in the Columbus Dispatch, a subcommittee tasked with developing a proposal cancelled a scheduled meeting meant to address redistricting reform last week. In the Dispatch piece, Common Cause Ohio’s Catherine Turcer discussed some of the issues involved with crafting a proposal. The legislature may still act without a recommendation from the Modernization Commission.
