Sinclair Broadcast Group: DeJoy insists USPS can handle election mail, but experts say voters should act early

“President Trump and Postmaster General DeJoy’s continued attempts to try to rig the election by undermining the USPS received a strong bipartisan warning today: don’t mess with the USPS,” Karen Hobert Flynn, president of Common Cause, said in a statement Saturday. “As the nation continues to suffer from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, a robust and dependable USPS is needed more than ever.”

Days after assuring senators that all election mail could be delivered on time this fall despite a recent wave of Postal Service policy changes that have caused delays, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy faced another round of questioning from skeptical Democrats Monday. …

While many Republicans seemed satisfied with DeJoy’s answers Friday, the House proceeded Saturday with a vote on emergency legislation that would provide an infusion of funding to the Postal Service while prohibiting service changes that could impact the election. The bill passed with some Republican support, but it has little chance of ever seeing a vote in the GOP-controlled Senate.

Voting rights advocates applauded the passage of the House bill and urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to take up the bill. Despite DeJoy’s denials under oath, some still suspect the Trump administration of trying to derail the election.
