Still, critics believe LaRose, as the state’s chief election official, should be held to a higher standard. And Catherine Turcer, executive director for Common Cause Ohio, worries Ohio politicians haven’t learned from the racketeering conviction of former House Speaker Larry Householder.

“It could be a road map for how candidates manage upcoming elections,” Turcer said. “As opposed to being a cautionary tale, all this dark money that is swirling at the federal level and swirling in Ohio can make candidates think that it’s perfectly OK and not actually take action to create greater transparency and greater accountability.”
