Democracy Fellows will work in their communities with the support of Common Cause Texas staff to ensure that every citizen of Texas who wants to vote is able to cast a ballot safely and with confidence, through work in our legislative advocacy program, election protection campaign, and through public education about the state of voting rights in Texas. Our collective work will boost civic engagement and protect the rights of Texas voters in upcoming elections.
Residence in Texas is required, and applicants may apply from anywhere in the state though must plan on being available in Austin on February 2nd for an in-person orientation. This position will be remote, though some in-person work in Austin will be required (with travel expenses covered).
Applications are now open and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis, with an expected start date of February 1st.
This is about a 15-hour-per-week commitment. Selected Democracy Fellows will receive a $1000 stipend per month from February 1st – April 15th.
Fellows will be hired for Election Protection, Research, and Communications departments. Please specify which department you’d prefer to work in when submitting your application.
Over the course of the Fellowship, you will:
- Engage with your community and recruit volunteers to testify or engage in advocacy around voting rights issues in the state legislature and/or locally.
- Immerse yourself within your community to form community-based coalitions focused on election protection work.
- Gain experience in content production such as social media graphics, videos, blog posts.
- Gain experience creating graphics, videos, blog posts and gathering multimedia content.
- Conduct policy research and assist in finding content and citations for a Democracy on the Brink report.
The desired outcomes of the fellowship are:
- A base of volunteers and/or student activists.
- An increase in understanding of your state legislative process.
