We believe that by banding together, citizens can make a difference. We throw a spotlight on issues that affect all Tennesseans. Our purpose is clear: make public officials and public institutions accountable and responsive to citizens.

Common Cause Tennessee is continuing to grow and develop under the guidance of Chairman Dick Williams and a dedicated group of volunteers. Please check back often for important news that affects Tennesseans personally, information on how you can get involved in citizen advocacy, and what Common Cause Tennessee is focusing on currently.

Common Cause Tennessee is lead by Chairman Dick (Richard H.) Williams. Dick’s main interest, since 1974 — as a volunteer — has been lobbying the Tennessee legislature on behalf of citizens as a Common Cause/TN board member and lobbyist and in cooperation with other public interest groups. In addition, he has been a board member and lobbyist of Tennesseans for Fair Taxation. Dick played a significant role lobbying for improvements to “Ethics” legislation, with major advances in 1975, 1989, 1995, 2005 and 2006. In 2007-2008, he worked with others on Open Records and Meetings and revisions to the 2006 Ethics legislation. With Gathering To Save Our Democracy, Tennesee Alliance for Progress and others in 2008, he helped to secure the integrity of the vote with voter verified paper ballots. He opposed and worked to modify subsequent legislation to defer the paper ballot act. He has opposed requiring a photo ID to vote and is working with others to repeal that 2011 law and to help persons to obtain the necessary ID in case the repeal effort fails.
