Common Cause Rhode Island Congratulates former Gov. Gina Raimondo on her Confirmation as U.S. Commerce Secretary in Time to Oversee Final Stages of the Census

Common Cause Rhode Island worked with Secretary Raimondo on Census 2020 outreach in Rhode Island. She spoke up early with concerns about then-President Trump’s effort to unconstitutionally exclude undocumented immigrants. She worked to raise awareness of the Census Bureau’s end-to-end test which was held in Providence County in 2018. She formed Rhode Island’s first-ever statewide “Complete Count Committee” to ensure that all Rhode Islanders would be included in 2020 Census data — including members of communities that are traditionally “hard to count.” And she included money in her state budget to help fund outreach efforts.

2020 Census Data Collection to End Tomorrow

The last full day for Rhode Islanders to complete the U.S. Census is tomorrow, October 15, 2020. To date, 99% of households in Rhode Island have been contacted by the Census Bureau, but that does not mean every Rhode Islander has been counted. Only 65.3% of households have provided a self-response.

Committee Begins Work To Ensure Accurate 2020 Census Count

State leaders are worried Rhode Island will be undercounted in the 2020 Census. A group of volunteers, including elected officials, policy makers, activists, and members of the private sector are trying to change that.

Rhode Island could lose one of its two U.S. House seats and maybe federal money too. Can it come together to ensure an accurate census count?

The last time a U.S. census form arrived in the mail, Marcela Betancur helped her mother fill it out.

Nesi’s Notes: Feb. 2

Congressman Cicilline is holding out hope that the 2020 Census will turn up enough Rhode Islanders to hold onto one of the state's two U.S. House seats. "I actually don't think it's settled," Cicilline said on this week's Newsmakers. While that's true -- and a famously aggressive effort by Massachusetts in 2000 helped the Bay State keep a 10th House seat -- it's safe to say most other observers sound far more pessimistic.
