Common Cause Announces Support for Confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to Supreme Court

In a letter sent to the U.S. Senate this morning, Common Cause urged senators to confirm U.S. Circuit Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Common Cause’s letter highlighted Judge Jackson’s strong commitment to justice for all and the wealth of experience she brings that led to bi-partisan support throughout her judicial career.

In addition to her vast experience as a lawyer and jurist, Common Cause underscores how Judge Jackson’s confirmation would strengthen confidence in the Court, bringing an end to the 200 plus years of a Supreme Court without a Black woman’s perspective on the bench. Nor has a justice served as a public defender. Judge Jackson’s confirmation would strengthen representative democracy.

Common Cause’s support for Judge Jackson is the first time in the organization’s 52-year history it has taken a position in support of a Supreme Court nominee’s confirmation.

Statement of Common Cause President Karen Hobert Flynn

Judge Jackson’s nomination comes at a moment of tremendous consequence for the very fabric of our democracy. Our freedom to vote, our right to choose our leaders in fair elections, and our access to an accountable government are all on the line. We need to strengthen confidence in the rule of law and the institutions that engage in it. That’s why Common Cause is proud to support the historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Judge Jackson has already proven her qualifications—and her mettle—to the nation. She has been confirmed three times with bi-partisan support because of her vast experience as an attorney and judge, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to justice for all Americans.

After senators review her accomplishments and engage in her confirmation hearing, all that will be left is an affirmative vote to confirm our country’s first Black woman to the Supreme Court. We deserve a Supreme Court that is representative and reflective of our nation. Through her lived experience, stellar legal career, and bi-partisan support, Judge Jackson represents the very best of our country.

Judge Jackson’s nomination is an opportunity for our country to unite behind an immensely qualified jurist who will ensure all Americans—Republican, Democrat, and Independent—are treated equally under the law. Her confirmation will be a new day for our country, ensuring the highest court in the land better reflects the diversity and experiences of all Americans.
