New Attorney General Must Publicly Commit to Not Interfere with Mueller Investigation

Statement of Common Cause President Karen Hobert Flynn

Whoever becomes the next Attorney General of the United States — whether acting or permanent — must make a public commitment not to interfere in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Jeff Sessions is an attorney general whose nomination Common Cause opposed and whose actions in the office have done damage to a variety of democratic institutions, but at least he recused himself from oversight of the Special Counsel’s investigation due to clear conflicts of interest. To give the President free reign to name a new A.G., of whom he will no doubt demand an oath of loyalty, would be a grave disservice to the nation.
