Role: North Carolina HBCU Research and Organizing Intern 

Location: One position in the Triangle or Triad Region and a second position in Charlotte, NC (mostly remote; some in-person events depending on schedule) 

Start Date: June 1-July 31, 2023 

Reports to: Vashti Hinton 

Details: This role is part-time (15 hours/week), and temporary (8 weeks) 

Essential functions: We are seeking student interns to work with our state chapters relating to voting and elections, redistricting, and democracy reform. Interns will assist with advocacy campaigns, grassroots engagement, research, policy development, communications, and member outreach and events. Individuals with a keen interest in government affairs and the legislative process, can-do attitude, and a commitment to a fair and transparent democracy are highly encouraged to apply.  

Responsibilities:  

  • Support HBCU Team with summer projects and goals  
  • Help develop and create content to share with our base  
  • Build outreach template documents (i.e., graphics, emails, survey templates, etc)  
  • Build and maintain outreach tracking documents  
  • Research issues related to college students  
  • Visit the NC General Assembly and meet with lawmakers  
  • Coordinate and work with CCNC Partners to host events and work on tasks  
  • Researching, writing, proofreading, and editing of discussion guides and social media toolkits  
  • Attend relevant meetings and events  
  • Social Media Support  
  • Draft social media posts to help highlight important issues  
  • Create content for upcoming important dates in the fall (National Voter Registration Day, local election dates, last days to register, early voting dates, etc.)  
  • Create and distribute content on our social media accounts and/or youth email list  
  • Work with staff to plan and promote online engagement events  

Required Skills + Experience  

  • Familiar with HBCU’s and HBCU culture  
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and identify solutions  
  • Attention to detail in the creation and presentation of all work  
  • Self motivation and a willingness to learn  
  • Strong skills with Google Suite apps like Outlook, Slack, Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Docs  

 Qualifications:

  • Must be passionate about good government issues.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent writing, researching, and editing skills are required; must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel. Experience with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are helpful.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse range of community partners. Good listening and communication skills.  

Salary: $2,040 for the 8 weeks paid in 4 equal twice monthly payments on the 15th and last day of the month. 

 Classification:  This position is classified as temporary and therefore not included in the union-represented collective bargaining unit.
