Common Cause NY Executive Director Susan Lerner on Collaboration of Attorney General Schneiderman and Comptroller DiNapoli to Strengthen Ethics Enforcement

Susan Lerner, executive director of Common Cause NY stated today:

“This bold initiative will strengthen the policing of ethics in Albany and local government, and Common Cause NY commends the Attorney General and the Comptroller for working together to address the gaps in New York State’s ethics laws. Not only will this new initiative significantly increase the ability to criminally prosecute corruption, but the fact that the governor can also refer additional powers to the attorney general – just as Comptroller DiNapoli did – gives him an added piece of leverage as he negotiates a strong ethics bill with the legislature.

“We hope that the attention which Attorney General Schneiderman and Comptroller DiNapoli have given to the need for strengthening ethics enforcement in New York within the confines of existing law presages a similarly serious effort by the Legislature to embrace meaningful ethics reform and close the glaring gaps in New York’s ethics law.”
