In the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida, and ALEC’s connection to the “Stand Your Ground” gun law that for weeks protected the teen-ager’s killer, ALEC has been under intense media and public scrutiny. At least 11 major corporations, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Coca Cola and PepsiCo, have announced their departure from ALEC. Common Cause will announce a whistleblower complaint it has filed against ALEC with the Internal Revenue Service based on thousands of pages of ALEC records Common Cause obtained. The documents raise new questions, including legal issues, about ALEC’s activities.
