BOSTON — Governor Healey just signed a compromise gun reform bill into law that will improve public safety and ensure safer elections in Massachusetts. The new law includes a critical ban on guns at and within 150 feet (equivalent to the existing electioneering buffer zone) of polling sites, both on election day and during the early voting period - a legislative priority for Common Cause Massachusetts members. 

“At a time with heightened fear of political violence, the Massachusetts Legislature is sending a clear message that voters can cast a ballot without fear in the Bay State,” said Geoff Foster, Executive Director of Common Cause Massachusetts.

"If the legislature wants to make our democracy more accessible in Massachusetts, they must send this reform to the Governor’s desk.”

VICTORY: the Senate passed an amendment that will end the voting penalty for voters who don’t return the municipal census.

"The Municipal Empowerment Act falls short on ensuring access to public meetings."
