Common Cause is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to upholding the core values of our democracy. The national redistricting team seeks to ensure that the process of drawing voting districts is transparent, nonpartisan, and focused on fair representation for our communities. This year and last year, voting districts at every level of government were redrawn to reflect new census data. Common Cause has led coalition efforts to demand fair and transparent redistricting processes. The National Redistricting Intern will assist the team’s efforts to participate in litigation challenging gerrymanders and defending reforms, complete a research project with coalition partners assessing this cycle’s redistricting process, and implement reforms at the state and local levels.
LOCATION: Remote or Hybrid
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The National Redistricting Intern will work with Common Cause’s Redistricting and Representation team. Individuals with a keen interest in government affairs, politics, democracy reform, and the legislative process, a can-do attitude, and a commitment to a fair and representative democracy are highly encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist staff with all a range of advocacy and communications activities, including:
- Litigation challenging gerrymanders and defending reforms
- A research project with coalition partners assessing this cycle’s redistricting process,
- Public education of reforms at the state and local level.
Summer 2022 interns will work for 8 weeks for 15-20 hours/week.
The priority application deadline is May 16.
Hours and start dates are flexible, ideally June 1- July 29.
COMPENSATION: Interns will be paid $600 as an untaxed stipend every 2 weeks. There will be a total of four payments.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be passionate about good government issues. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Excellent writing, researching, and editing skills are required; must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel. Experience with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are helpful. Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse range of community partners. Good listening and communication skills.
First-generation college students, low-income students, and/or students of color are encouraged to apply.
