Last week, a bipartisan bicameral group of Pennsylvania lawmakers joined for a press conference to announce the formation of a working group seeking to draft and pass comprehensive redistricting legislation. Led by Senator Lisa Boscola (D-Northampton), the group aims to empower representative government by reforming a mechanism that has led to the system becoming “politically tainted, polarized, and gridlocked.”

We are thrilled to announce the first place winners of the Common Cause “Gerrymander Standard” writing competition.

As promised, we are announcing the winners of Common Cause’s inaugural Democracy Prize writing competition to identify the best “gerrymander standard.” On Monday, we announced the third place winners.

As co-chairs of Common Cause’s inaugural Democracy Prize writing competition to identify the best “gerrymander standard”, it’s our privilege to announce the winners of the competition this week, as promised on Friday.

Last year Common Cause launched the inaugural Democracy Prize Writing Competition to identify the best “gerrymander standard.” On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week, we’ll announce each of the winning entries in daily blog posts summarizing their ideas and linking to the papers.

The Oregon Legislature passed a bill put forth by Common Cause and the Redistricting Matters Coalition to bring more public input and transparency to the redistricting process.
