Washingtonian: Washington DC’s 500 Most Influential People of 2024

Virginia Kase Solomón - Common Cause President and CEO Solomón, who came to Common Cause in February, has backed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a stalled effort to modernize the 1965 Voting Rights Act meant to combat voter suppression. First job: Blockbuster Video. Worst career advice she ever received: “To be more realistic about my goals because I was a teenage mom and I should be happy just to have a steady income.” Song currently on repeat: “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa.

WHP-TV (Harrisburg, PA): A nationwide group is looking for PA to join a cause to change the constitution

Common Cause is a group that opposes any constitutional convention. Spokesperson for the group, Viki Harrison said the rights Ward is concerned about could be on the chopping block. “Once the convention is convened there is the very real fear of a runaway convention, where delegates could bring up anything they wanted to,” Harrison said. “Anything that you could be taken away from you, whether it’s the right to vote, whether it’s the right to clean air, education for your children the right to worship the way you want to.” Harrison said there are both democrats and republicans that oppose the idea of a convention.

Lincoln Journal Star (Op-Ed): Honoring a compromise

If the 2024 session is to be a new leaf as Speaker Arch pleaded, then Sen. Halloran needs to honor his agreement. Any attempts to pass an Article V resolution should be shelved until 2027. Keeping promises and compromises for their full term would indeed be a “model” for other state legislatures.

Public News Service: Voting rights groups call constitutional convention efforts a threat to democracy

Geoff Foster, executive director of Common Cause Massachusetts, said there are no rules in the Constitution for how to govern a convention and no guarantee, even the First Amendment, would be safe. "There's great risk and great potential harm to everything already enshrined in our Constitution if we do open up this Pandora's box," Foster cautioned. Foster pointed out a convention could potentially allow unelected delegates and special-interest groups to enshrine their agenda into a founding document.

Orlando Sentinel/Sun Sentinel (Editorial): The Legislature’s con-con con job

The citizens’ lobby Common Cause calls the nationwide movement for a convention “the most serious threat to our democracy, flying almost completely under the radar.” What can you do? Sign Common Cause’s online petition opposing an Article V convention. Track how your legislator votes on these bad bills. Then vote against anybody who thinks this is a good idea.

Yahoo! News/Kansas City Star: Do you trust far-right politicians working to remake the Kansas and US Constitutions?

“The delegates could write amendments that revoke any of our most cherished rights — like our right to peaceful protest, our freedom of religion, or our right to privacy,” the progressive watchdog group Common Cause warns. Hyperbole? Maybe. The point is we simply don’t know.
