Common Cause welcomes veteran campaign finance and voting rights advocate and communicator David Vance as its National Media Strategist. In this newly created position Vance will take over management of the organization’s contacts with the media and work to strategically advance Common Cause’s issues and amplify its voice at the state and national level.
Vance spent the last decade deeply involved in most of Common Cause’s core issues, including money in politics, voting rights, ethics, redistricting, media reform, and disclosure. From 2006 to 2016 Vance served as Director of Communications and Research at the Campaign Legal Center in Washington. He worked extensively with Common Cause staff on a variety of issues during his tenure there.
“Dave brings with him a depth of understanding of the issues, and as importantly, an ability to translate those issue for media and the public, that few people have,” said Scott Swenson, Vice President of Communications. “Adding to his substantive understanding is a solid reputation as a go-to resource and thought-partner for many A-List Beltway reporters covering our work.”
“Holding power accountable is as critical today as on the day Common Cause opened its doors and I am excited to be joining the organization and its hundreds of thousands of politically active members at such a critical juncture for the future of our democracy,” said Vance. “It takes voters and activists to bring about change at a time when Washington is gridlocked and court cases are too often determined by the political leanings of those who appointed the judges.”
Vance has an extensive background in public relations and journalism. He has served as public affairs director for an international trade association and worked for two public relations firms in Washington, DC where he handled public affairs, public relations and crisis issues both nationally and internationally for a broad range of corporate, association and non-profit clients.
Before entering the public relations field, he worked for several news bureaus in Washington, DC, WCAX-TV in Burlington, Vermont as well as The Washington Post.
Vance is a native of Washington, DC and holds an M.S.J. from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from George Mason University.
