Statement from Common Cause RI on Resignation of Bryant Da Cruz from the Rhode Island Ethics Commission

Statement from John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island:

We’re relieved that Bryant Da Cruz has resigned from the Rhode Island Ethics Commission. Recent reporting has revealed information about Mr. Da Cruz’s past behavior while serving in public office that makes him unfit to serve as a member of the Ethics Commission.

Appointments to the Ethics Commission should be made with the utmost care in light of the extraordinary powers of that body to protect against the abuse of public office. We are glad that Governor McKee has acknowledged the inadequacy of the vetting process that resulted in Mr. Da Cruz’s appointment. Members of the Ethics Commission must be carefully vetted, especially because they do not receive advice and consent of the state Senate. We hope that future appointments will be chosen carefully and held to a high standard.
