Republican-authored legislation prohibiting third parties from funding election operations passed the Pennsylvania Senate.

Common Cause, a good government advocacy group, opposed the bill, with Executive Director Khalif Ali saying the bill “does not guarantee that the Legislature will provide required election funding.” “It only limits where counties can look for help when they need it,” Ali said ahead of Wednesday’s vote.

The new state House and Senate districts will be in effect for the coming decade.

Added Khalif Ali, executive director of Common Cause Pennsylvania: “The Supreme Court’s decision today marks the end of the 2020 redistricting process in Pennsylvania. But our work is far from over – now we must work to educate every voter about their new districts, advocate for increased access to the ballot box, and ensure that every eligible Pennsylvanian can cast their ballot in a safe, secure and accessible election.”

“Yesterday’s decision from the Supreme Court of the United States is good news for Pennsylvanians,” said Khalif Ali, executive director of Common Cause Pennsylvania.

“The Supreme Court upheld the rule of law, including decades of settled precedent and practice governing the role of state supreme courts in the redistricting and elections processes. We will continue to monitor this litigation because all Pennsylvanians deserve voting maps where their voices can be heard.”

A redistricting fight of a different sort has emerged this year: a battle to ensure that minority communities don’t have their voting power diluted.

Khalif Ali, the executive director of Common Cause Pennsylvania, said the coalition of good government groups has held “several hundred conversations in which they talk to communities of interest and had them document where they saw value in their communities.”

A disturbing trend is emerging in some corners of Pennsylvania politics: if at first you don't succeed, change the rules until you do.

Republican state lawmakers, frustrated by the governor's power to veto laws, are now abusing Pennsylvania's constitutional amendment process to get what they want.

Anti-gerrymandering forces hope ongoing litigation will limit the impact of partisan and racial bias in state and congressional redistricting this cycle.

“Common Cause Pennsylvania is participating in this case as an amicus to ensure that voters of color that have historically been left out or worse by the redistricting process can have their voices heard,” said Khalif Ali, executive director of the chapter. “We are continuing to seek a better way of drawing maps that put people, not politicians, in the drawing seat.”
