Hundreds of NCCU students ‘soar to the polls’ & cast their votes early

On the same day that an early voting site opened on their campus, hundreds of students at NC Central University in Durham marched to the polls to cast their ballot on Thursday.

Led by the school’s marching band, the students made their way through campus, chanting “black votes matter” as they arrived at the polling place located within the university’s law school building. For many of these students, this was their first time ever casting a ballot.

“It’s great to see such excitement for voting among the students,” said Alyssa Canty, college outreach coordinator with Common Cause NC, which helped organize the march to the polls. “This is an experience that we hope will motivate students to stay engaged and active in our democratic process well beyond Election Day.”

In addition to NC Central University, Common Cause NC is working with students at eight other historically black colleges and universities in North Carolina, encouraging these young people to make their voices heard as part of the organization’s Black Votes Matter campaign.
