Common Cause in CT Addresses Bridgeport Ballot Stuffing Allegations

Following the allegations of election tampering in the September 12 Democratic primary election, Cheri Quickmire, executive director of Common Cause in Connecticut, released the following statement:

“The video released by candidate John Gomes’ campaign alleges someone inappropriately handled absentee ballots. This is a serious allegation, especially given how close the final results of this race were, but candidates regularly take issue with the conduct of their opponents and their campaigns. Fortunately, the State Elections Enforcement Commission and the Bridgeport Police Department are already investigating the charges.

“While this is concerning and has been an issue previously in Bridgeport, we must not extend this distrust to our absentee ballot system as a whole. Whether voting in person, early, or by mail, Connecticut voters can be certain their votes are counted safely and accurately.

“We will watch this situation closely as it develops, and we will continue to speak up against those who intend to sow doubt in the integrity of our elections.”
