DENVER – Colorado Common Cause has hired a new leader to drive the organization’s pro-democracy work in the state, naming Aly Belknap as its newest executive director. In this role, Belknap will focus on election protection efforts, championing pro-democracy policies, increasing government transparency, and strengthening Colorado’s gold-star election system.
“I’m proud to be joining the Common Cause team and bringing my passion for civic engagement to the organization,” said Belknap. “In my work, I’ve continually seen the impact that Colorado Common Cause has in our state, both in the legislature and out in the field assisting voters. I look forward to the work ahead, helping build a reflective, responsive, people-powered democracy that works for all.”
Born and raised on the East Coast and a Colorado resident for five years, Belknap leverages eight years of experience in youth voter engagement, grassroots organizing, and election policy. In her previous role as field director at New Era Colorado, Belknap oversaw statewide organizing programs engaging young people in Colorado’s elections, legislative sessions, and special issue campaigns. These programs included large-scale voter registration, voter education, GOTV and election protection efforts. Belknap also led New Era Colorado’s election policy work, scoring policy victories protecting voting rights and expanding access to the polls for young people.
“Colorado is a critical player in the national fight for a fairer, more inclusive democracy,” said Elena Nunez, Director of State Operations for Common Cause. “We are thrilled to have Aly leading the way, serving as a watchdog and championing accessibility to our democracy for all, especially ahead of another consequential election year.”
Based in Denver, Belknap is a proud graduate of The George Washington University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in international affairs, focusing on international democracy and governance issues. Belknap has previously served as an ambassador of Planned Parenthood and has successfully organized at a variety of levels, including university-based, local, and national campaigns. The core of her organizing has focused on increasing civic engagement and access to the ballot box for young people and historically marginalized communities – work she is thrilled to continue at Colorado Common Cause.
