In Oregon and across the country, the media has enormous power to shape political discourse. It's a core component of a healthy democracy.
However, more and more, commercial pressures are overriding the media's obligation to serve the public. Consolidation of the media into a few hands, the loss of authentic local news sources, price-gouging for cable and internet service, uneven access to high speed internet, and lower standards that the media ensure robust and balanced political reporting and transparent political advertising -- all this impedes widespread access to impartial information so necessary for a healthy democracy.
It doesn't have to be this way. Together, we have the power to make changes here in Oregon and at the federal level to ensure diversity, accessibility and accountability from media corporations and the government agencies that regulate them.
