Bannon Conviction Shows No One is Above the Law

Statement of Common Cause President Karen Hobert Flynn

No American is above the law, including former Presidents and their advisors. That point is hammered home today with the conviction of Steve Bannon for contempt of Congress after he defied subpoenas from the January 6th Committee.

The case against Bannon was cut and dry but the verdict is nonetheless important. Congress must have subpoena power in order to fulfill its oversight duties. If individuals could defy congressional subpoenas with impunity our system of checks and balances would break down.

Americans deserve to know the full truth about what led up to and what happened on January 6, 2021 when a violent, racist, and heavily armed mob attacked the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election for Donald Trump. The January 6 Select Committee’s historic work presenting its damning evidence to the American people—including evidence obtained from its subpoenas—will be critically important to exposing the truth and obtaining accountability for this attack on free and fair elections.
