RALEIGH – This morning, the Republican-controlled NC House held a surprise vote to override the governor’s veto of a proposed $24 billion state budget. The vote was taken over the objections of Democratic representatives and with almost half of all NC House members absent.

The following is a statement from Brent Laurenz, deputy director of Common Cause NC:

“Today’s surprise vote in the NC House is no way to conduct the people’s business, let alone act on something as consequential as our state’s budget. Such shameful tricks severely undermine public confidence in the integrity of the lawmaking process and harm the spirit of bipartisanship and mutual respect that is vital to a functioning legislative body. We must expect better from legislative leaders.”

Common Cause NC is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy.
