"No voter should really have to risk their lives to go vote. We should be able to protect our public health and protect our voting rights at the same time."

Vashti Hinton is the college outreach coordinator at the nonprofit government watchdog and advocacy organization Common Cause NC, where she works with historically Black colleges and universities (known as HBCUs) to promote political education in communities of color.

Following allegations that U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and other senators sold large amounts of stock after confidential briefings on COVID-19, Common Cause, a nonprofit government watchdog group, has filed complaints with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Senate Ethics Committee.

It was a full-on celebration at the North Carolina Central University student center as they prepared to exercise their rights.

“There was no justifiable reason for the 2016 special legislative session that was hatched in secrecy,” said Bob Phillips of Common Cause North Carolina. “It was a deliberate effort by Republican legislative leaders to keep citizens in the dark about their plans to engage in a nakedly partisan power grab. It was wrong, and it must not happen again.”

Over 200 lawyers and law students attended a symposium at Campbell Law School on Friday, February 7 entitled, “2020 Vision: A Look At Voting Rights in North Carolina.” The keynote speakers were Michael Spencer and Vashti Hinton-Smith of Common Cause of NC who spoke about voting rights for American Americans in North Carolina.
