House Bill 44 was introduced into the North Carolina General Assembly, to repeal the literacy test from the North Carolina Constitution.

They say the youth are the future. That’s why one North Carolina organization is investing time and money into them; specifically, disenfranchised Black and brown youth. Common Cause is a national, nonpartisan organization that works to ensure fair elections by holding those in power accountable through lobbying, litigation, and organizing.

Black Voters Matter and Common Cause North Carolina held a march to the polls event at Johnson C. Smith University to encourage young voters to vote.

“Things are going well in North Carolina today,” said Jane Pinsky, director of lobbying and government reform at Common Cause North Carolina. “And that’s in credit to all of the people who’ve worked with us for the last 15 years to guarantee long early voting periods, guaranteed curbside access to voters with disabilities and the ability to easily get and return absentee ballots.”

Other events hosted by OLCE this semester included a National Voter Registration Day Block Party and a Ballot Business Declassified Voter Education Fair. The office frequently collaborates with other civic engagement organizations like the N.C. Black Alliance, You Can Vote N.C., Common Cause N.C., and the university’s Divine Nine chapters.
