“Not only are rural counties less likely to have fulsome access to DMV sites and hours, but many rural communities across the state face the biggest financial challenges to overcome all sorts of barriers created by photo voter ID laws,” Jones said.

Gino Nuzzolillo, a 25-year-old staffer at Common Cause, conceived the town hall series and led the one at Gibsonville. “We can’t keep going to Raleigh,” he said. “We have to build a base in other places.” Across the state, Common Cause said more than 30 local advocacy groups have joined the effort.

“Here in North Carolina, in particular, we see threats, even right now as we are speaking at the legislature to our right to vote,” Phillips said. “Certainly, that’s a concern for us.”

The non-partisan Sandhills Coalition for Peace, Love, and Justice wishes to thank Common Cause NC for bringing its 2023 #UniteNC Town Hall to Moore County.
