On Thursday, the NC General Assembly passed a photo ID requirement for voting (Senate Bill 824) and sent the measure to Gov. Roy Cooper for his signature or veto. Common Cause NC respectfully calls upon Gov. Cooper to veto this legislation.

Near midnight last night, a surprise new version of Senate Bill 325 was posted without prior notice, proposing the elimination of the widely popular final Saturday of early voting and making other changes to the early voting period.

"It is wrong and dangerous to enshrine voter suppression and discrimination in our state's Constitution."

The motion by Common Cause asks the U.S. Supreme Court either to affirm the district court’s judgment or agree to hear oral argument in the case of Common Cause v. Rucho.

As the 2018 legislative election season begins in earnest, Common Cause NC urges North Carolina voters to ask candidates where they stand on ending gerrymandering and enacting nonpartisan redistricting reform.

"We will ask the Supreme Court to affirm the lower court ruling or hear this landmark case," Phillips said. "And we are confident that the court will ultimately agree that the legislature’s extreme partisan gerrymander violates the constitutional rights of North Carolina citizens."
