The first step is knowing who represents your interests at all levels of government, from your Congressional delegation to your local school board members.

Who represents me on my County Commission?

A county commission is a common form of local government in Minnesota operating on the county level. Commission members are elected by their constituents to represent their best interest. The County Commission functions as the county’s primary legislative and policy-making body. Commissioners are the chief executives of the county organization, set policy and are responsible for making sure they are implemented.

To find out who represents you on your County’s Commission, you will need to do a little footwork. First step is to google the name of the county you live in and the term “County Commissioners”. Here is an ex., “Ramsey County, County Commissioners”.  You can also call your County Office and ask how you can find out who represents you on the County Commission. Next, do a little research on your County Commissioner’s website. Learn about who they are, what they care about and what they may be working on. Find them on social media and follow them. Finally, schedule an informational call. Ask them questions, share your ideas, concerns or recommendations about something that you care about. Listen to what they have to say about what they can do.

Who represents me on my City Council?

A city council is a group of duly elected officials who serve as the legislative body of a city. Council members, also known as a town council or board of aldermen, are called to  represent the interests of their constituents. In addition to proposing, passing, and ratifying laws and ordinances, city councils manage budgets and investigate city agencies when necessary.

To find out who represents you on your City Council, you will need to do a little footwork. First step is to google the name of the county you live in and the term “County Commissioners”. Here is an ex., “City of Minneapolis, City Council”.  You can also call your City Hall Office and ask how you can find out who represents you on the City Council. Next step is to do a little research on your City Council member’s website.  Learn about who they are, what they care about and what they may be working on. Find them on social media and follow them. Finally, schedule an informational call. Ask them questions, share your ideas, concerns or recommendations about something that you care about. Listen to what they have to say about what they can do.

Who represents me on my School Board?

Your local school board member essentially has three jobs. They pass an annual budget, they are responsible for policies which include writing policy, researching policy, and at the end of the day, voting on policies. Finally, they hire, manage, and evaluate the superintendent of schools.

You can find out who sits on your School Board by simply asking a member of the School’s Office or the school’s principal.  They can provide you with the information you need to look them up online and communicate with your School Board member directly.  If for some reason they are unable to provide you with that information, you can call your area Superintendent’s Office and they will provide you with the information.
