Voting Rights Restoration

A democracy that is truly of, by, and for the people must extend the right to vote to all its citizens. Common Cause is pushing back against laws that disenfranchise and disempower millions of Americans every year.

Felony disenfranchisement, or the practice of denying currently and formerly incarcerated citizens their right to vote, creates a class of people who are subject to the laws of this country without a say in how they are governed. These laws are Jim Crow era relics, originally created to uphold white supremacy by stripping Black Americans and other citizens of color of their right to be heard. Restrictions currently vary from state to state, and Common Cause is working across the country to uproot this broken and unjust system with Voting Rights Restoration reforms.

Stop HJR B

Legislation

Stop HJR B

HJR B is Michigan's version of the federal SAVE Act — both would gut voter registration and block voters. The proposed requirement of documentary proof of citizenship in order to vote would disenfranchise millions of Republican, Democratic, and independent voters who do not have passports, birth certificates, or other forms of identification required under the legislation.

Tell our Senators Slotkin and Peters: BE LOUD and REJECT the anti-voter SAVE Act

Every eligible American deserves the freedom to vote without jumping through impossible hoops.

But the SAVE Act would scare newly naturalized citizens out of voting and make it harder for millions of eligible voters to cast a ballot—especially seniors, women, students, veterans, and rural voters.

In our state alone, 5,859,601 voters don’t have passports, 2,214,291 married women could face documentation issues, and thousands of voters used online registration that this bill would eliminate.

The SAVE Act would also...

Tell Your Representative: Vote NO on Michigan’s Anti-Voter Bill

Michigan lawmakers are pushing a bill that would force voters to prove their citizenship—again—just to stay registered. It’s a copycat of Trump’s federal SAVE Act and could purge eligible voters from the rolls, create long lines at the polls, and block people from casting their ballot. The bill (HJR B) has passed out of committee and is now heading to the full Michigan House for a vote—and it could happen any day now. Send a...
