We’re glad that the Senate Rules Committee is getting back out in the field, and meeting Americans where we are. Things look a lot different when viewed from Atlanta than they do from DC. Here in Georgia, we’re watching closely what Congress does -- and doesn’t do -- this legislative session.

As the Supreme Court issued its voting rights and donor disclosure decisions yesterday, local small business owners gathered near the John Lewis portrait in Atlanta’s Freedom Park and urged US Senators to pass the For the People Act. 

Today, Campaign Legal Center Action and Common Cause Georgia filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that during the lead up to the Georgia Senate runoff elections, the Georgia Republican Party illegally coordinated with True the Vote.

SB 221 would create a huge loophole in Georgia’s current campaign finance limits, by allowing unlimited donations to a new type of political committee -- controlled by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and legislative leadership. It would allow big corporations and out-of-state big money donors to buy our elections.

'They want to make it harder for people to vote. They want to make it easier for special interests to buy our government. And they want to put our constitutional rights at risk. This is a case study in how to take government away from the people.'

Dr. King would remind us that “disfranchisement is the main instrument for perpetuating racial injustice.” The lines at Georgia’s polling places, back in June, showed the entire country that racial disparities in voting access are still real. Access was improved in the November and January elections, but some voters still faced barriers.
