Poll: Texas Republicans Don’t Support Mid-Decade Redistricting
Austin, TX — A new poll from Common Cause shows that Texans across the political spectrum reject mid-decade redistricting, with 55 percent saying they oppose the move. That includes 60 percent of independents and a plurality of Republicans (44 percent opposed and only 34 percent in favor).
In July, President Trump sparked this crisis by pressuring Texas lawmakers to gerrymander their maps to pick up five extra Republican U.S. House seats ahead of the 2026 election. But our polling shows most Americans, including Republicans, oppose both mid-decade redistricting and partisan gerrymandering. That’s why Common Cause released fairness criteria to guide states looking to counterbalance Trump’s anti-democratic push without sacrificing long-term reforms for fair representation, like independent redistricting. The data is clear: voters want fair maps, not power grabs, and even Republicans reject the White House’s scheme.
“In very clear terms, our poll shows even Texas Republicans do not support mid-decade redistricting,” said Common Cause Texas Director, Anthony Gutierrez. “Texans want lawmakers to take real action to address the issues we deal with every day — not holding special sessions to further gerrymander our state. The legislature should follow the data, listen to the people, and put an end to mid-decade redistricting. Lawmakers need to focus on what really matters: supporting disaster relief efforts, investing in our emergency response systems, and ensuring all Texans can afford to put food on their tables.”
Common Cause commissioned Noble Predictive Insights to conduct multiple polls on redistricting, including a 2,016 person national poll, and a 400 person Texas poll. The poll was in the field August 26 – September 2.
Findings show broad opposition to mid-decade redistricting from Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Results also show a majority of Texans (62%) support empowering independent redistricting commissions to draw district lines rather than state lawmakers, including majority support from Republican and independent voters, including Donald Trump voters.
“By ramming a blatantly discriminatory map through the legislature in the middle of a decade, Texas Republicans managed to convince huge majorities of both Democrats and Republicans to take the power to draw district lines out of the hands of politicians once and for all,” added Gutierrez. “Over 70% of Texans want redistricting handled by an independent commission and Common Cause Texas aims to build support towards making that happen the next time the legislature is in session.”
Texas Poll Highlights:
