Minority Again Kills Disclosure Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Twice within 24-hours, a minority of Senators have taken the path of obstruction over transparency and disclosure in our elections. After a marathon seven-hour overnight session on the floor of the United States Senate that lasted until early this morning, Senate Republicans voted again to block the full chamber from proceeding to consideration of the DISCLOSE Act (S.3369) by a vote of 53 to 45.

“A minority of the Senate has chosen to side with billionaires and corporate titans over the public’s right-to-know,” said Bob Edgar,President and CEO of Common Cause. “Americans should not accept the phony excuses offered by the Republicans that give cover to the very few who seek to buy our democracy in their shadow campaigns. A majority of the Senate and a majority of the American people should be enough to proceed to debating this bill on its merits.”
