Statement by Karen Hobert Flynn, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Programs

Thanks to Senator Murkowski for recognizing that democracy is not a partisan issue. Common Cause and especially our 2,000 members and supporters in Alaska applaud her efforts to ensure that the voting rights of thousands of Alaskans who have faced discrimination at the polling place are protected.

Her support today for the Voting Rights Advancement Act sets an example for every senator, particularly her fellow Republicans. This legislation deserves the kind of bipartisan support the Voting Rights Act enjoyed when it was originally passed in 1965 and again each time it was re-enacted. As we approach the election of a new President and Congress next year, it’s vital that every citizen have unfettered access to the vote.
