Maryland Election Results May Take Several Days, Even Weeks

Elections officials must wait until the day after polls close before they can start opening mail ballot envelopes and checking that voters have signed their oaths. Governor Larry Hogan vetoed a bill that would have allowed elections officials to begin pre-processing mail ballots before the polls close.

Maryland Governor Vetoes Elections Bills

In one of his last actions on legislation, Hogan has vetoed bills to make what he described as “positive changes to State election law.” The measures would have allowed elections clerks to pre-process mail-in ballots, so they can count the votes and announce results more quickly; created a statutory process allowing voters the opportunity to “cure” mistakes on their mail-in ballots, rather than having the ballots rejected; and provided for precinct-level reporting of early voting, mail-in voting and provisional ballots.

VICTORY: Federal Judge Orders Baltimore County to Submit Redistricting Plan that Complies with Voting Rights Act

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD – In the federal court challenge to an illegal redistricting plan, brought by Black voters in Baltimore County and several civil rights organizations, Federal Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby granted a preliminary injunction blocking implementation of the County’s plan and ordering them to submit a new plan that complies with the Voting Rights Act by March 8.
