Advocates Win Major Inspector General Reform in Baltimore County

After calls from Common Cause Maryland and other good government groups, the Baltimore County Council approved a charter amendment yesterday to reform how the county’s Inspector General is appointed.

Baltimore, MD – After calls from Common Cause Maryland and other good government groups, the Baltimore County Council approved a charter amendment yesterday to reform how the county’s Inspector General is appointed.

Baltimore County residents deserve a truly independent Inspector General. This measure helps ensure politicians can’t pick the very watchdog meant to hold them accountable,” said Joanne Antoine, executive director of Common Cause Maryland. It’s a step towards building a government that works for the people, not politicians. Residents have made it clear they support the Office of the Inspector General and look forward to approving this change on the ballot in November 2026.

The reform, championed by Common Cause Maryland, would create an independent advisory board to recommend future Inspector General appointments.
